KNUE와 BBC: 익명성의 두 얼굴

If you ever need information about a class or if you’re curious about anything related to campus life, almost all students of KNUE would knowwhere to find the answer. The source for good tips and answers for daily questions is found in Chungram Square’s ‘Waiting for the Morning Sun’. This is a website where students of KNUE upload questions and comments anonymously. There are approximately 221,300 posts and according to a post found, it is said that this anonymous post has begun around 2001. Being around for more than a decade, this online bulletin board is considered to be practical and helpful. The reason for this webpage’s longevity is mainly due to the anonymity provided to all users.

Anonymity can provide beneficial effects and yet can also be a source of chaos. It really is a double-edged sword. In a beneficial way, hidden identities give people comfort to ask simple questions or share their feelings. This gives people the chance to communicate and sometimes build empathy. Regarding its harmful uses, a study done by Philip Zimbardo of Stanford University said that people tend to act aggressively and rudely when their faces and names are hidden. These results in mean comments, unofficial accusations, judgmental opinions, and many other issues. Both of these positive and negative effects can render drastic
results. These effects of anonymity can be seen through KNUE’s ‘Waiting for the Moring Sun’.

As some people may say this anonymous post is practical, some may say it has more negative effects. Trivial questions, crush confessions, lost and found items, and comments are posted in ‘Waiting for the Morning Sun’. Practical uses for the website are simple questions such as, asking for recommendations for good hospitals, whether the food truck has arrived, and if the café has opened. Another usage of ‘Waiting for the Morning Sun’ is for crush confessions. Many students post descriptions of other students they find attractive and ask for information such as whether he or she is single. Furthermore, this webpage is also used as a lost and found corner. Many lost items such as wallets, various cards, and other belongings are found and posted for owners to claim. While there are trivial debates such as whether using laptops in the library is appropriate or not take place, there are sensitive rudely when their faces and names are hidden. These results in mean comments, unofficial accusations, judgmental opinions, and many other issues. Both of these positive and negative effects can render drastic results. While there are trivial debates such as whether using laptops in the library is appropriate or not take place, there are sensitive debates from time to time as well. Here is where the negative effects of anonymity commonly appear. Some examples are debates such as, gays are the main cause of HIV AIDS, Korean feminists are just like ‘Ilbe’ (politically right-winged controversial website), and the need for expelling all feminists. In addition to these debates, there are mean comments that arise about judging cosmetic surgery, homosexuality, appearance, and many other topics. Due to these hateful and rude remarks, there are people who are hurt and some who react more aggressively.

‘Waiting for the Morning Sun’ is part of KNUE’s campus life. From silly questions to serious topics dealt, many students use this anonymous post to communicate. Although anonymity has its negative features, it is considered more useful than it is harmful. For this website to be an area solely for practical
and positive purposes, abiding to general rules and etiquettes would be a wise decision.
