[Vol.81]Disgruntled Teacher on Teacher’s Day
스승의 날 행사 무산되다
Last May 15, a Teacher’s Day event that was going to be held in the Teachers’ Culture Hall went up in smoke. It was because of the sudden leave of the president. After he went into the hall, he looked around and went back to his office saying there are not enough people to celebrate.
On that day, there were about 35 school club members waiting for their turns to perform on the stage, 40 of student representatives of each department, twelve winners of the contest and reporters of KNUE press. Also, the vice president, deans, chairs, professors and other guests attended. However, due to the sudden cancellation, all of those who came to the event had to go back. As this became controversial, Lee Eun-ji, Chair of the Emergency Committee issued a statement demanding the President apologize as of May 18.
On the other hand, some point out that the event was not thoroughly prepared. They say that there was a lack of promotion. On May 1 and 14, two postings promoting the event were uploaded on the Emergency Committee’s Instagram. However, the expressions were relatively vague, and there was no mention of official absence. Also, it was said that some details were missing during the rehearsal. According to Lee Hyun-gyoon, the student President of Dept. of Elementary Ed., student representatives of each department had to check the number of carnation needed for their professors. As this is an unprecedented case, the controversy is expected to persist, yet the verdict is already out: this year’s Teacher’s Day was clearly not the same as years past.
