Members of the KNUE community are urged to use extra caution when driving or walking on the country road from the side gate near Saimdang Dormitory to Gangnae-myeon Office, due to road construction. It is scheduled to continue for several months, therefore continued disruption for both vehicle and pedestrian traffic is anticipated.
According to the city government, a contractor for the city of Cheongju is building a new bypass from Local Road 507 near Tabyeon 1-ri to National Route 36 near Jinheung Apartments. In a bid to compensate residents in Gangnae-myeon, where the new municipal waste disposal site will be constructed, the city government decided to build better infrastructure and to spend approximately 25 billion won in total on this new bypass construction.
The project is divided into two parts. Construction of the first 1.0 km section of the road is now in progress, and will link Tabyeon 1-ri and Ssangyong Apartments near Wolgok Elementary School. This first part is expected to be completed by October 13 this year. The construction of the remaining 1.5 km part will not begin for several years and is scheduled for completion by 2025.
If completed, the travel time from Cheongju IC to KNUE will be reduced by avoiding the heavy stop–and–go traffic on National Route 36. The new bypass will not only relieve traffic jams on the national route, but also make it easier for people to visit KNUE campus for various reasons as well as to commute.
