Korean National University of Education, which was founded in March 1984 and opened in March 1985, is facing the 30th school anniversary now. And there is a professor who shared this whole 30 years life with KNUE. Entering KNUE in 1985 and now being the professor here, we can regard him as the 'history of KNUE'. INDIGO interviewed professor Lee Dong Ju.
REPORTER : Hello, professor. This is reporter Kim Ji soo from the press Indigo. We are very honored to interview you. Can you tell us about the things that are changed compared to past?
PROFESSOR : Okay, I'll tell you some stories. Long ago, about 25 years ago, there were some interesting programs for us. One of them was 'early morning roll call', which bothered our good sleep. Every student had to line up and ran along the track in the playground wearing the same training uniforms. Another one was a 'talent show' held in every Thursday evening at the dormitory restaurant. Many students showed their talents in groups or individually. One more thing was a 'bathing day', and we could clean up our bodies once in a week on a regular basis at the public bathroom located under the dormitory restaurant. Imagine the situation!
REPORTER : Oh, "early morning roll call" and "talent show" ? It's the first time to hear that kind of the things(laughter). And is there any difference in clubs or student council, too?
PROFESSOR : Well, I can't remember all of the student activity clubs. But there were some memorable clubs such as 'Maek', Korean traditional farmers' musical plays, right? This club has a long history, and many student members has been enjoying the activity until now. As for me, I worked as a member of reporters in the KNUE newspaper bureau, and luckily I worked as the first chief editor for more than two years. I remember all of the members tried to make a good free press environment in order to express our voices for justice and academism. Now I am truly proud of all of the student reporters who had worked, and who are now working for the KNUE newspapers.
And yes, There was a student council in the campus. We first graduates got many president positions at different levels of councils. the first, second, third, and fourth colleges, you know. Every member of the councils and other students also tried to make a constructive campus environment at the beginning of the inferior campus surroundings. However, I express regret about current situation in these days, mainly because most of the students are now lacking interest in student councils and their work.
REPORTER : Yeah, we are worried about that problem, too. Students are lacking their interests in student council though it's their duty. And how about the facilities? Have they been changed much, too?
PROFESSOR : Yeap, when I was here in 1985, there were only a few buildings, for example, Gyoyanghakkwan, two dormitory buildings for both genders, and a student restaurant. and then many buildings were constructed year by year. While I was studying for master's and doctoral higher education here this campus from 1992 to 2002, I witnessed a lot of buildings constructed. Maybe you can't imagine the poor facilities and surroundings more than 20 years ago.
And also, there were many old farm houses around the campus. All of them disappeared and changed to new modernized buildings. There were few shops at Miho area, but we had to go there on foot for having birthday parties for our friends. I remember once in a month we collected some money for friends' birthday parties. There was only one chicken shop, very traditional shop we can visit an old traditional local market place. No coffee shop, no bakery shop! Ah, in 1985 the road from Miho to campus wasn't paved. When going out there, we had to take off our socks in he rain. Imagine the situations and landscapes near the campus in those days!
REPORTER : Yeah, it seems that much things changed! But there still many complains about location of KNUE(laughter). There's not much things to enjoy, you know. Anyway, how about students? Is the tendency of students seemed to be changed? And if you want to give some advices to our KNUE students, please tell us.
PROFESSOR : In the second half of 1980s, most of the KNUE students were suffering from financial problems, that is, they are almost poor. As many teachers' college students were, many of KNUE students had to choose our university regardless of their future dreams and hopes. Nevertheless, we were trained to become good teachers, and we made our efforts to become more qualified teachers for our country's future education. At last now about 30 years have passed, more than 10,000 teachers play wonderful roles at different school levels, and there are many education experts who are working as school principals and vice-principals, school supervisors, university professors, and various institute researchers, and so on. Some alumni work for non-education-related companies, banks, and other working places showing their brilliant talents and getting great fames. I think it's miracle!
Our university, KNUE is now has a stable position as a nation-wide teacher education university. Based on the short but miraculous history and great development, I'm sure we can realize another new dream to become more famous teacher education center in the world. Every member of KNUE should play his/her role for it without any hesitation. We KNUE members can contribute to lead students to live happier lives in he future.
Honorable our junior KNUE students! There are lots of admirable KNUE alumni all over the country and the world who have been raising the reputation of KNUE. I'm really proud of all of you mainly because you have tremendous potential to uphold this great traditions. Keep in mind our university's maxim words: 'LOVE', 'TRUST', and 'ENDURANCE' and wake up and go ahead! (이까지 2pg)
Although we are students of Korean National University of ‘EDUCATION’, there are many fellows who don’t want to be teachers due to their dreams. They concern and worry constantly surrounded by all the preliminary teachers. To encourage those fellows, we interviewed our graduate Chae Han Sik who is working as the lawyer.
REPORTER : Hello, it’s a real honor to have a chance to interview you, sir. We sincerely appreciate you accepting this interview. Here’s the first question. What made you enter KNUE at first?
GRADUATE : Well, my homeroom teacher recommended it strongly. I didn’t fixed my dream to be the teacher, actually.
REPORTER : Then, what was the definite motivation that made you decide to be the lawyer?
GRADUATE : Until being commissioned as ROTC and working as the platoon commander, I’ve never thought even once about having a job far from the teacher. Thought I’ll be the teacher naturally. However, about the time I was to be discharged, the rule of prior employment for state-funded teaching school students was founded unconstitutional. So I should pass the teacher certification examination to be the teacher, and that made me consider more seriously about my course. So I prepared jurisdiction examination having interest in law, giving up the secondary teacher certification examination(passing the first one earlier). I thought I'll be able to realize my ideals of education more easier this way, because the policies are run by law.
REPORTER : I see. How did you prepared for the jurisdiction examination? Did you have another difficulties preparing for the job far from education?
GRADUATE : I experienced a examination hell. I just bought books and solved all the problems. I've never studied any subject about law(except reading the constitution book during the university), so I started at the beginning supposing I'm in law college.
REPORTER : Yeah, can't even imagine how hard have you studied. Can you give an advice to the students in KNUE who want to work in the area apart from education?
GRADUATE : Find the field and duty that you can really enjoy, even if that makes you to go around the long way instead of a shortcut.
REPORTER : How do you think about the ideal direction that KNUE should go? What should we do to have more progress?
GRADUATE : You guys are working great and you will do great, too. I hope that KNUE can be the institution that can have a strong impact for stabilization of public education, growing lots of expectants at education who are brave and independent.
And for the students, I want to tell them "enjoy your life". You guys seem to think that 4 years in university is all of your life and you will manage the life depending on the result of it. But like I studied at the beginning point, you have lots of time after the graduation. You should take a long view for the rest of your life, which can be 80 years or longer. Be relaxed so that you can start a new thing whenever you want. Youth can be forgived, so enjoy your life!
As all things in the world change as the time flies, KNUE has run through lots of transitions, too. And we INDIGO interviewed two of our graduates who were in the center of all changes. We can proudly say that we are their reflections as one of the students in KNUE, experiencing all the transitions here. Going through the fruitful past and now becoming a field that can make students have diverse experiences, we can expect the bright future of KNUE, too.
