Nothing can be happier than passing the passing the teacher certification examination for KNUE students who studied for being a teacher. However, passing an exam does not mean getting a job. According to the Ministry of Education and the Office of Education, as of March 1, 2019, the accumulated number of candidates who have not been appointed stood at 3,670 in elementary schools and 282 in middle and high schools. Such a slowdown in new appointments is due to such reasons as a drop in the school-age population, a sharp drop in the number of voluntary retirees and an increase in the number of people returning to work.

In a situation where the waiting period is inevitable, what to do during the waiting period has to be considered. It may be a tough time for someone to earn a living from part-time jobs even after passing the employment exam. On the other hand, it may be a valuable opportunity for others to do what they could not do while attending school. Then how are KNUE graduates who passed the teacher certification examination spending this time? INDIGO interviewed Ro-Wonhee and Kim-Jaehong for an answer to this question.

-Interview with Ro-Wonhee

Q1. Please introduce yourself briefly.

  1. I am Ro-Wonhee who graduated from the elementary education department of KNUE.  I am waiting to be assigned after passing the exam of Gyeonggi province in 2019. Even those who passed the exam in 2018 have not been appointed yet, so it is expected to be appointed in September of this year or March of next year.

Q2. What have you been doing these days?

  1. I am working as an illustrator at a publishing company that makes textbooks. Also, I am doing all kinds of things I wanted to do such as meeting friends, writing books and drawing webtoons.

Q3. Have you felt any financial or psychological pressure about the delayed appointment?

  1. If I wanted to make money, I had the choice of being a part-time teacher. Also, there are many other things I can do to make money, so I had no financial burden. On the contrary, there was a little psychological burden. Some are doing part-time teaching, and others were already appointed, but I'm still not a teacher. This fact weighs heavily with me.

Q4. Do you have anything special you want to do or plan to do during the waiting period?

  1. I wanted to go on a trip, but I couldn't go because I didn't want to do anything when the exam was over. I regret it so I would like to heal in Southeast Asian countries which are near or just take a staycation. For the experience, I am planning to be a part-time teacher for about two months.

Q5. Lastly, Can you give any advice on how to spend this time to your juniors?

  1. I recommend enjoying yourself as much as you can and experiencing as many things as possible. I think it would be good to find a hobby while learning new things like musical instruments or digital drawing. You can enjoy your hobby later on when you go into the teaching profession.

-Interview with Kim Jae-hong

Q1. Please introduce yourself briefly.

  1.  I am Kim-Jaehong who graduated from the elementary education department of KNUE. I am being placed on the waiting list after passing the exam of Seoul in 2019. During the training for successful applicants, the director of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education said that elementary school teachers in Seoul are waiting for more than a year regardless of their rank. Therefore I expect a waiting period of about a year and a half.

Q2. What have you been doing these days?

  1. I am now employed as a part-time teacher for the first semester and I am preparing traveling expenses in the second semester.

Q3. Have you felt any financial or psychological pressure about the delayed appointment?

  1. I want to go to the army after being appointed. However, if the appointment is delayed, it will be a bit late for going to the army at that age, but I don't feel much pressure though.

Q4. Do you have anything special you want to do or plan to do during the waiting period?

  1. First of all, I am working as a part-time teacher to afford traveling to Portugal in the fall and I would like to study a foreign language in the first half of the next year. Also, I am planning to work as a part-time instructor.

Q5. Lastly, Can you give any advice on how to spend this time to your juniors?

  1. If the waiting period is confirmed for more than a year, it would be good to work as a part-time teacher based on the same concept as an intern for three to six months. However, if the waiting period is confirmed for less than six months, I strongly recommend you to just take a rest and travel.

The validity period of the successful candidate list is three years, and if it is not assigned within three years, the acceptance will be canceled. However, no such case has been found until now and most candidates are assigned in two years. Furthermore, as indicated by the interview above, if you want to make money, you have a variety of options. Also, the Office of Education will contact those who are on the waiting list to find a part-time instructor or teacher.

It may be too early to think about what to do even before passing the exam. However, aren't you excited just thinking about what to do with a precious opportunity that you have only a few times in your life?
